As soon as news of Anderson Cooper’s coming out announcement broke, fans and celebrities took to Twitter to show their support for the CNN anchor and show host.
Anderson, who is notoriously guarded about his private life, finally ended the speculation about his sexuality in an email to Andrew Sullivan which was posted to his site The Daily Beast: “In a perfect world, I don’t think it’s anyone else’s business… but I do think there is value in standing up and being counted.”;
He adds: “The fact is, I’m gay – always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself and proud.”;
While some ask, “what took him so long?’, many fans didn’t question his timing and are simply showing support. Neil Patrick Harris tweets: “Good for you, @AndersonCooper. You’re awesome.” Fellow talk show host Ellen DeGeneres writes: “I’m proud of you.”; Joan Rivers tweets she’s thrilled he came out, joking: “THAT’S why he never wanted to date me! I would’ve loved having Gloria Vanderbilt as my mother-in-law.”; Adding, “Still thinking about Anderson Cooper. Interesting how he decided to come out so soon after Tom Cruise is back on the market. Coincidence?!?.”;
But Anderson’s biggest celebrity supporter is CNN’s New Year’s Eve co-host and good friend Kathy Griffin, who in her own letter to the Daily Beast, explained why she never outed her pal. “For years, I talked around it,”; the notoriously outspoken comedienne writes. “And quite frankly he never gave me permission to speak about something that represented the one part of his life he was not comfortable having confirmed in the media.”;
While Kathy stands by her friend, she also admits there are dangers in his admission. Anderson claims one of the reasons why he kept tight lipped was for safety concerns: “I have found that sometimes the less an interview subject knows about me, the better I can safely and effectively do my job as a journalist.”; And Kathy echoes his concerns: “I don’t pretend to understand the complexities of the worlds Anderson moves in… But I do know that I don’t want my friend to face that part of the world, where he might die a very different kind of death than someone who isn’t quite so honest.”;
The “Silver Fox”; has the twitterverse abuzz and here are more words of encouragement:
Kelly Ripa: “So proud of you @andersoncooper. Always have been, always will be.”
Lance Bass: “What a classy guy.”;
Mia Farrow: “In a better world a person’s sexuality would be irrelevant.”;
Josh Groban: “Wait, I’m sorry I only get my news by creeping up behind water coolers with an iPod in my ears. Anderson Cooper is Gaelic?”;
LeAnn Rimes: “Rock on @AndersonCooper for being a brave, classy man. Much respect!”
