Days after her husband Dalton Prager died from complications of cystic fibrosis, 26-year-old Katie Prager has also passed away from the same disease.
Katie’s mother Debbie confirmed the news on Facebook Thursday, posting, “Early this morning, [Katie] gained her wish of being at home, in her bed, surrounded by her mom, dad, brother and her dogs, dying peacefully, away from the hospital, tubes, IVs.”
“I know Dalton was waiting with open arms, as well as both her grandmother’s and a host of family and friends that have gone before her,” she continued.
The couple, who first met on Facebook when they were 18, had a relationship that echoed that of the characters in “The Fault In Our Stars” with Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort. The couple married two years later and planned to travel across all 50 states together, writing about their journey after they each received lung transplants. Unfortunately, Katie’s lung transplant didn’t take and she was confined to hospice care in Kentucky.
Dalton passed away on Saturday in a St. Louis hospital. He was 25. His funeral was held in Missouri on Wednesday.
The couple last spent time together in July to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary. “It gave me some of the best years of my life,” Katie told CNN last week. “I’d rather have five years of being in love and just really completely happy than 20 years of not having anybody.”
