The Tragically Hip’s emotional farewell tour proved to be a bittersweet hit with fans, propelling the Canadian rockers to top fellow countryman Justin Bieber when it came to highest-grossing summer music tours.
According to Canadian Press, the Hip’s 15-date summertime tour may have been confined to Canada, yet it still managed to crack the top 10 of global concert grosses.
Data from industry tracking agency Pollstar places The Tragically Hip’s tour at seventh place on its global concert charts, with an average gross of US$1.85 million per show.
While that figure is well below that of Bruce Springsteen, Beyonce and Paul McCartney, it places the band above Justin Bieber, Rod Stewart and Rihanna. but above other tour favourites including Bieber, Rod Stewart and Rihanna.
Front man Gordon Downie — diagnosed with terminal brain cancer — will be returning to the stage for two shows to support his new solo project “Secret Path,” inspired by the true story of 12-year-old Ojibway boy Chanie Wenjack, who died from hunger and exposure while trying to escape from a residential school.
