Selena Gomez has just hit a social media milestone, becoming the first person ever to accumulate 100 million followers on Instagram.
The “Hands to Myself” singer now has the most-followed account on Instagram, topping the likes of Kim Kardashian (who has 83.6 million followers), Ariana Grande (85 million), Beyonce (85.3 million) and Taylor Swift (91.4 million).
Making the achievement even more impressive is the fact that Gomez hasn’t been particularly active on Instagram lately, with her last post (a photo of herself onstage) appearing six weeks ago, which garnered an enviable 2.9 million “likes.” Gomez previously broke a record for “likes” when a photo of herself sipping some Coke through a straw hit a record-breaking 4 million “likes” (it’s now closing in on 5.6 million).
Gomez released a statement several weeks back, announcing she was cancelling the remaining dates on her Revival World Tour to focus on her health.
“As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways. I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges,” she said.
“I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off,” she added. “Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues.”
Meanwhile, Gomez’s fans have taken to social media to celebrate her hitting the 100-million mark, starting the hashtag #SelenaBreakTheInternet:
