After teasing his fans with a hint of new music earlier this year, Niall Horan surprised his loyal fans on Thursday by — finally— dropping his new solo single, “This Town”.
One Directioners will be happy to hear that the ballad isn’t a strong departure from 1-D’s signature sound.
The Greg Kurstin-produced acoustic song centres on Horan mourning the end of a special romance.
“Waking up to kiss you and nobody’s there / The smell of your perfume still stuck in the air / It’s Hard / Yesterday I thought I saw your shadow running round / It’s funny how things never change in this old town / So far from the stars,” he sings.
The surprise also came with the news that Horan has signed with Capitol Record USA. “I’m excited to announce I have signed a record deal with Capitol Records USA and released my first solo song,” he wrote in a press release.
Horan also shared the single on Twitter and thanked his fans for their ongoing support, writing, ”thank you to all the One Direction fans for your love and support as always. I’m looking forward to the next part of this journey together.”
Two of his One Direction bandmates, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson have since taken to Twitter to congratulate their friend on his new music. “Ahhh, a lovely tune my friend. Congratulations. H,” Styles wrote.
Tomlinson, meanwhile, tweeted, “feeling super proud @NiallOfficial . You sound great ! Great to see you at your bday bash!!”
