Clash Of The Tartans: ‘EW’ Teases Bloody Battle At Centre Of New ‘Outlander’ Season

Filming is underway on the third season of “Outlander” and the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly serves up a sneak peek at the upcoming season to make fans’ “droughtlander” a little less painful.

EW was on location in Scotland during shooting of the pivotal battle scene that will finally see Jamie (Sam Heughan) face off on the battlefield against dastardly foe “Black” Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies), and Heughan admits he’s been looking forward to the confrontation just as much as fans have.

“It feels like something that’s been coming for a long time,” Heughan tells EW of Jamie receiving a shot at revenge against the man who tortured and raped him. “It’s very intense and emotional for both characters, something they have both been seeking.”

Judging by photos from the set shared on social media, the confrontation promises to be a bloody one:

As readers of Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlander” novels already know, however, there’s no such scene in the books, yet exec producer Ronald D. Moore thinks viewers will feel cheated if they don’t see these two characters face to face in fury. “It just felt like for the TV show, we’ve been promising this for a while, and it just felt like we should have something,” he explains. “We should give the audience some sense of what happened on that moor.”

Meanwhile, star Caitriona Balfe (who plays lost-in-time Claire) reveals that when her character reunites with Jamie, it won’t be on the Scottish highlands — but in the Caribbean.

“This is the crazy thing about ‘Outlander’. Every season is its own identity,” says Balfe. “I haven’t worked with Sam [yet in production] and it just feels like a very different world at the moment. And I know in a few months it’s going to feel completely different again. We’ll be in a different country and not even on solid ground.”

The third season of “Outlander” is set to debut next year on Showcase. In the meantime, you can read more about the new season in the latest issue of EW.
