While appearing on a climate change panel at the White House on Monday, Leonardo DiCaprio made headlines when a joking remark he made was reported as fact, with some news outlets claiming the Oscar-winner was planning to embark on a trip to Mars.
During the event, Elon Musk’s SpaceX program entered the conversation, with the panel discussing Musk’s plan of sending volunteers on a one-way trip to the red planet in order to colonize Mars. Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, a scientist on the panel, maintained that we need to focus on problems with Planet Earth before we head off to other planets, quipping: “As long as we haven’t signed up for the trip to Mars, I don’t want to know if anyone has, I think you’re crazy.”
“I did,” replied DiCaprio jokingly, with President Obama adding: “I think he’ll acknowledge he’s crazy.”
However, those in attendance were clear that everyone was joking and laughing during the exchange. To lay the rumour to rest, Gossip Cop checked in with “a source close to DiCaprio,” who confirms that he is “not going to Mars” and that his comment “was a joke.”
