The spark between Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello was undeniable in their “I Know What You Did Last Summer” video, and now one year later, the Toronto-born singer is still shutting down unrelenting romance rumours with People.
As always, the “Treat You Better” singer insists the chemistry between the songwriting duo is simply platonic. “A thing? No, we weren’t, actually,” Mendes tells the magazine. “We’re just really close friends. She is one of those people who is just very easy to connect with and still, to this day, is one of my greatest friends.”
As he explained earlier this year to Seventeen, Mendes is simply a huge fan of Cabello’s undeniable talents. “She’s a f***ing great writer,” he continues. “Even if we just wrote for other people, I would be happy to do that because she’s such a thrill to write with and work with.”
Mendes has been laughing off questions about the rumoured romance while promoting his newest album “Illuminate”, which debuted on September 23. “We don’t take ourselves seriously… so that wasn’t awkward,” Mendes said before dishing out even more kind words about Cabello. “We’re also so close with each other that we could say anything, and it wouldn’t make a difference. And that’s a friendship that you have to hold onto forever.”
“We’re not dating — nor did we,” he added.
