Although she’s a self-professed fan of British girl group Little Mix, former Spice Girl Mel C says she thinks the band is pushing its sexy image a bit too far.
Mel C, formerly known as Sporty Spice, first saw Little Mix years ago when they won the U.K. “X Factor”, but says she’s dismayed to see their sex appeal eclipse their music.
“I love Little Mix. I loved them from The X Factor. I just thought they were so different,” she says in a new interview with Sunday People, reports The Mirror.
“But they are getting more provocative. To me, they were kind of the closest thing to the Spice Girls we’ve seen. They are all gorgeous and great singers. But they weren’t sexy and it’s got more and more that way. I love them – but I just say, ‘Stay you.’”
Mel C admits that her young daughter is a big fan of Little Mix’s music, but she tries to keep her away from the more “provocative” aspects of their image.
“She is a massive Little Mix fan but I’ve started to be more sparing in what I show her. I don’t let her watch videos by artists that aren’t appropriate for her. That makes me a bit sad,” she says, adding: “All young women want to look sexy and hot so I understand it’s hard. But I think it’s such a shame.”
As she sees it, it’s a sign of the times, which are markedly different than when she and her fellow Spice Girls asked us to tell them what we want, what we really, really want.
“We live in a narcissistic age – it’s 100 per cent worse than when I was in the Spice Girls,” she says. “It was a more innocent time, although we were criticized for wearing crop tops.”
