Jim Carrey is firing back after being hit with a wrongful death by the mother of late girlfriend Cathriona White, who alleges the Toronto-born star is responsible for the suicide of her daughter.
According to TMZ, Carrey’s attorneys filed legal papers claiming that White’s biological mother, Brigid Sweetman, sent him an email in November to complain that “people were vandalizing her house with foul messages and leaving death threats in response to Cat killing herself,” reports TMZ. “She believed she was getting blamed for Cat’s death because of a ‘horrific and degrading’ Facebook post she’d left for Cat on her birthday.
According to Carrey, Sweetman told him: “I am on the point of killing myself,” and asked him to buy a new house for her. When he declined, says Carrey in his legal filing, “she became angry and bitter.”
Carrey’s legal team is characterizing Sweetman’s lawsuit as a cash grab, with his legal documents claiming that she never loved her daughter — “she loves only money.”
Carrey also denies giving her an STD, and says that White “profusely apologized for those accusations when they got back together in 2014,” adding that he believes she made up the allegations because she was upset over their breakup.
In the documents, Carrey says, “I loved her face. I loved her Irish voice. I loved the way she smelled,” adding that they enjoyed a “beautiful 10-month relationship filled with sweetness, caring and affection.”
Sweetman’s attorney, Michael Avenatti, tells TMZ that “Carrey and his ‘fixer’ lawyers are trying to deceive the media and the public. They are attacking a grieving mother and making up facts they know to be untrue in an effort to save Carrey’s career, which was over when he lied about not having STDs.”
Avenatti is also urging Carrey’s team to release the results of a 2013 STD test he alleges that Carrey took under the pseudonym “Jose Lopez.”
