Reports have been swirling that Mariah Carey and her fiance James Packer called it quits after almost 10 months into their engagement, but her rep tells ET they are “trying to work it out” after a recent fight they had during their September vacation in Greece.
“The fight was not because of any cheating allegations or excessive spending by Mariah,” says Carey’s rep, adding Packer is “one of the most successful businessmen in the world.”
“They are trying to work it out,” Carey’s rep continues. “Right now, they’re not sure if they will stay together.”
According to People, Australian billionaire businessman, 49, had ended things with the American pop diva, 46, over her extravagant spending habits and upcoming tell-all reality television show with E!, “Mariah’s World”, an eight-part series set to premiere on December 4.
A source tells People, “James is all about business and making money. Some of Mariah’s eccentric ways, especially her spending habits, caused drama. James is the most generous person ever, but he definitely doesn’t agree with senseless spending.”
When it comes to Carey’s upcoming show, which is set to follow the singer as she begins her “Sweet Sweet Fantasy” world tour and plan for her wedding, the source adds: “James is very private, and he doesn’t need the media to be successful. He doesn’t want to be part of Mariah’s reality show.”
Interestingly enough, while the source claims the couple are “not together right now,” it is noted that it is “possible they will get back together. They are still talking, but James needed a break.”
Carey and Packer first met back in 2014 at the premiere of “Hercules” in Aspen and the businessman later proposed to her in January 2016 in her hometown of New York with a whopping 35-carat diamond ring, worth a reported $10 million. Carey shares five-year-old twins from her past marriage to Nick Cannon, while Packer has three children with his ex-wife Erica Baxter.
