Renton, Spud, Begbie and Sick Boy are reuniting after 20 years apart in the first full trailer for “T2: Trainspotting”.
Ewan McGregor returns as Mark Renton, the Glasgow heroin junkie who overcame addiction in the original 1996 film by director Danny Boyle. Flash forward to 2016 and now McGregor is a household name, as is co-star Jonny Lee Miller, and Boyle is an Oscar-winning director, having earned an Academy Award for “Slumdog Millionaire”.
Our first look at the highly-anticipated sequel doesn’t miss a beat as Miller’s Sick Boy asks, “So, what have you been up to for 20 years?”
Fans worried the sequel would be a departure from the original can cast their fears aside, as the trailer updates the famous “Choose Life” narration using a track from British electronic band Underworld off the 1996 film’s soundtrack and re-introduces viewers to original “Trainspotting” characters and actors, including Ewan Bremner, Kelly Macdonald, Shirley Henderson and Robert Carlyle.
Not too much about the plot is given away in this first look, though it seems like Renton’s return doesn’t go as smoothly as expected, with him quickly returning to his old ways.
“You’re an addict,” Renton narrates. “So be addicted. Just be addicted to something else.”
“T2: Trainspotting” hits theatres on January 27.
