With news of Donald Trump’s U.S. presidential win taking the world by storm, the Internet has turned towards a powerful statement made by CNN commentator Van Jones.
While speaking during a panel discussion on the network late into election night, Jones addressed the anxieties many citizens in America and around the world were feeling as the poll numbers drew to a close. “People have talked about a miracle — I’m hearing about a nightmare,” he began by saying.
“It’s hard to be a parent tonight for a lot of us. You tell your kids don’t be a bully. You tell your kids don’t be a bigot. You tell your kids do your homework and be prepared. Then you have this outcome,” Jones said. “I have Muslim friends texting me should I leave the country? I have families of immigrants that are terrified tonight.”
Jones went on to add that the voting outcome was a result of “a rebellion against the elites” and, in particular, a rebellion against a changing racial climate. “This is a white-lash,” he said. “This was a white-lash against a changing country. It was a white-lash against a black president, in part, and that’s the part where the pain comes.”
