Who better than the fierce and fearless Alicia Keys to cover Elle UK’s newest Feminist issue.
The singer, whose album “HERE” dropped Nov. 4, sits down with the magazine to talk about her feminist stance, her family and of course, going makeup-free.
Keys covers the empowering issue in her now signature au natural beauty look that has garnered much attention over the past few months. But as the R&B star insists, it isn’t a marketing ploy but rather years of hard work that she is proud to show off. “It took me forever to get this skin. I mean, I know how it feels to have a face full of bumps and pimples. I lived through that in the public eye. But when I first got pregnant [six years ago with her son, Egypt] I started to eliminate dairy from my diet and drank a lot more water, which made a huge difference to my skin,” Keys explains. “Some have called this a crusade. Well, I died laughing at that. I used to feel the pressure to appear as the music industry expected, but I don’t now.”
While her “crusade” has fielded both positive and negative remarks, with many attributing the music industry revolt to her feminist ambitions, Keys embraces the criticism and gets behind the movement with Elle. “Let’s look the definition up because I have in my mind what I feel it means…’The advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of political, social and economic equality’ – so yes. Yes, I am a feminist, and whoever isn’t is crazy,” she says. “It’s about owning your power, embracing your womanhood.”
