The season finale of “Last Week Tonight” dedicated its entire episode to the 2016 presidential election and host John Oliver remains in awe of last week’s election results. “Turns out instead of showing our daughters that they could some day be president, America proved that no grandpa is too racist to become leader of the free world.”
Oliver shared his daily reminder that this actually happened and that Donald Trump is the president-elect. “One minute you’re numb and the next minute you realize Donald Trump will soon have access to the nuclear codes.”
For Oliver, optimism towards Trump is “only nice if you can swing it” and warned that “you’ve got to be careful because it can feed into the normalization of Donald Trump, and he’s not normal.”
He continued by stressing the fact that Trump’s policies should be cause for concern. “He’s abnormal. He’s a human ‘What Is Wrong With This Picture’… So giving him a chance, in the sense of not speaking out immediately against policies he has proposed, is dangerous, because some of them are alarming.”
While some are suggesting that Trump may go back on some of his campaign promises and policies, that doesn’t absolve him of what he said. “Some argue he might not have meant all those things. That leaves us with two bad options: Either we just elected a president who didn’t mean a single word he said, or we elected one who did. Trump is like a Magic 8 Ball; every time you shake him he gives you a different answer.”
Oliver ends the segment with a tribute to 2016, declaring it “the f***ing worst,” interviewing people in the street about why this year sucked in particular for them. The dedication to 2016 also included celebrities like Kathy Griffin, Amy Schumer, Larry David and ‘Weird’ Al Yankovic telling 2016 off.
