The nominations for the 2017 People’s Choice Awards have been announced, and former One Direction band members Zayn Malik and Niall Horan are set to compete for the Favourite Breakout Artist of the Year award.
The official list of top five nominees in the digital, movie, music, and television categories were announced on Tuesday morning at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills, after fans voted for their favourite stars. Meanwhile, performers and the award show host will be announced at a later date.
Leading the film categories are “Captain America: Civil War” with seven nods, followed by “Suicide Squad”, “Deadpool”, “Finding Dory”, and “Zootopia”. Recurring film star names include Tom Hanks, Kevin Hart, Will Smith, and Ryan Reynolds, in addition to Jennifer Lawrence, Margot Robbie, and Melissa McCarthy.
In the television categories, perennials like “The Big Bang Theory”, “Grey’s Anatomy”, and “The Walking Dead” lead the nominations list, with the addition of popular newcomers including “Stranger Things”, “Marvel’s Luke Cage”, and “Westworld”.
When it comes to music, Canadian artists come out strong. Shawn Mendes and Alessia Cara both carry one nomination, while The Weeknd holds two nominations, and Toronto’s Drake boasts four nods, tying with Rihanna.
