Corey Feldman popped the question to longtime Canadian girlfriend Courtney Anne Mitchell over fears new immigration laws under Donald Trump could see her deported from the United States.
The couple was celebrating their fourth anniversary in Palm Springs, California when Feldman, 45, got down on one knee to propose.
“I was of course a bit nervous, as any man will admit, you never truly know what a woman is thinking,” he explains to People. “So as much as I assumed she would be happy and say yes, there’s always that insecure part of my brain that regresses immediately to my childhood and thought maybe not.”
Feldman proposed to 27-year-old Mitchell in an unconventional way by presenting her with a handwritten note asking her to marry him.
“So I kinda chickened out and did a written proposal by writing a note with two check boxes, one for yes and the other for no,” he says. “Of course there was a ring in there with the note. Luckily she said ‘yes!’ She was very surprised, excited and started crying. She was surprised because we had both been so anti-marriage since we met. But seeing as she’s Canadian and with Trump coming in, we didn’t want to risk being separated by new immigration laws.”
Mitchell has been performing on stage with Feldman, acting as his DJ. She appeared on his infamous “Today Show” performances dressed as an angel.
While Mitchell is currently focusing on her career, Feldman, who has a 12-year-old son, Zen, with ex-wife Susie Sprague, doesn’t rule out more children down the road.
“I have always said I wanna make sure I get it right the first time, and [that] Zen comes out perfectly, well balanced, before I even think about taking on any more responsibility. Courtney is young and she has a career in modelling and music, she would rather keep her body in good shape for now,” Feldman adds. “She’s getting good practice with Zen. If we ever were to choose that option it would be much further down the road. Paul McCartney style.”
The former 1980s heartthrob revealed the pair will tie the knot in a small, secret wedding ceremony for family only, before they have a larger wedding reception with friends and media invitees.
The couple is set to celebrate their engagement in Las Vegas with a joint bachelor and bachelorette party on November 19 at Chateau Nightclub at Paris Las Vegas. For $25, fans can buy tickets to the party to celebrate with the lovebirds.
