The iconic “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress worn by Marilyn Monroe has been sold at auction.
According to a press release, the custom 2,500 handstitched crystal Jean Louis creation, worn by Monroe in 1962 during her brief performance at the early 45th birthday celebration for President John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden, was sold by Julien’s Auctions this week for a whopping $4,800,000.
“Marilyn Monroe singing ‘Happy Birthday, Mr. President’ is certainly one of the most famous impromptu performances in American history,” said Darren Julien, President & CEO of Julien’s Auctions. “Tonight was one of the most important moments in our history as a company.”
Other items of Monroe from the first day of the three-day auction included the singer’s “Some Like It Hot” cocktail dress, which sold for $450,000; her “The Rose Tattoo” premiere gown, which sold for $125,000; and a pair of her Ferragamo shoes, which sold for $34,000.
