Disney’s ‘Moana’ Undergoes Name Change In Italy, Avoiding Confusion With Much-Loved Porn Star

Disney is hoping to avoid a potential PR nightmare as it releases “Moana” in Italy days before Christmas.

The studio has changed the name of their upcoming film to “Oceania”, with many Italians believing it is due to possible confusion with the country’s beloved porn star, Moana Pozzi.

As The Hollywood Reporter notes, the film underwent a name change to avoid awkward results as Italian families search for the movie online.

Disney has yet to share the reason behind the last-minute rebrand.

While films regularly take on different names abroad, sources close to the project tell THR that the movie’s directors confirmed the late porn star’s influence during this year’s Annecy Festival.

The animated feature tells the story of 16-year-old Moana from Motunui Island, who “sets sail in search of Maui, a legendary demigod and hopes to save her people.”

“Oceania”, which refers to the group of islands in the Pacific Ocean, premieres December 22 in Italy, and November 23 in North America.
