Donald Trump and wife Melania will soon be receiving a royal invitation from the Queen herself, with the Sunday Times reporting that Elizabeth II will invite the president-elect and his wife to be her guests at Windsor Castle.
According to the Times, the British government considers the 90-year-old monarch to be its “secret weapon” when it comes to establishing close ties between the U.K. and America’s new president, with a formal invitation for a state visit to be extended after he is sworn in as president on Jan. 20, 2017. It’s expected that the invitation will be for the Trumps to visit Windsor Castle during the summer.
“Discussions between British officials and Trump’s team are expected to begin soon to ensure that a date can be agreed for June or July next year,” reports the Times. “The Queen will also send an official congratulatory message to the president to mark the inauguration.”
The Times adds that the British government is planning to use a Trump visit “to secure a post-Brexit free trade deal with the United States and to make an early effort to shape his thinking on NATO, Syria and other foreign affairs issues.”
