In an appearance on “The Jess Cagle Interview”, Nicole Kidman took a trip down memory lane with People’s editorial director, remembering her audition for the 1990 film “Days of Thunder” and meeting her now ex-husband Tom Cruise for the first time.
“I remember walking in, I remember being so nervous and seeing Tom Cruise drive up in a Porsche, I think it was,” the “Lion” actress recalled. “He got out of the car and walked through and I was like, ‘Ah.’ My jaw dropped.”
The jaw-dropping moments didn’t end for Kidman. After meeting Cruise, she then had to audition in front of the film’s director Tony Scott and the film’s producers, Don Simpson, Jerry Bruckheimer, Robert Towne and Cruise was in the room, too. “I was like, ‘No way, I’m not going to get this.’ They called that afternoon and I had the job,” she said.
Kidman called her mom after finding out she had landed the role. “I was just like, ‘Oh my God, Mom!’ Yeah, that was huge. Huge,” Kidman continued. “You know, obviously, changed my life extraordinarily. So grateful for the film, for everything that came with it. It was a big, important part of my life.”
“Days of Thunder” was a massive box office success and what came out of the film was her 10-year marriage to Cruise and their two children, Connor and Isabella Cruise. “It was a beautiful marriage and all of those things that came out of it,” she said. “Two beautiful children. The rest is history.”
