Report: Michelle Yeoh Cast As Starship Captain In ‘Star Trek: Discovery’

No TV show this season is more anticipated for sci-fi fans than “Star Trek: Discovery”, and Deadline has some big casting news to reveal: Michelle Yeoh has signed on to play a starship captain.

However, “sources close to the production” tell Deadline that the “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” star won’t be the captain, and won’t be at the helm of the Enterprise but of another starship altogether, the Shenzhou, which will reportedly play a big part of the show’s first season.

While a rep for CBS TV Studios declined to confirm Yeoh’s casting, the series is set to begin production in Toronto, with a premiere slated for May 2017.

The first “Star Trek” series on the air since “Star Trek: Enterprise” (cancelled in 2005), “Discovery” will take place approximately 10 years before the events of the original 1960s series, and for the first time ever the lead character won’t be the ship’s captain, but a young woman serving as a lieutenant commander aboard the Federation starship Discovery.
