Wall Street Journal Film Critic Confuses Dev Patel For Kal Penn

Friday’s edition of The Wall Street Journal saw the paper’s award-winning film critic, Joe Morgenstern, mistake Dev Patel for Kal Penn — two actors of Indian heritage — in his review of “Lion”.

The article describes Patel’s performance in the drama as his best since 2006’s “The Namesake”, however, as one reader pointed out on Twitter, it was Penn, not “Lion” star Patel, who starred in the film.

Readers of the paper have since called out the writer for making the “embarrassing ”mistake. “@JoeMorgenstern Dev Patel wasn’t in the Namesake. Did you mean the other brown actor (@kalpenn) or other brown film? :(#wsj #lionmovie,” a tweet, which was retweeted by Penn, read.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning write has since addressed the issue on Twitter, calling it a “dumb error,” however the online version of the piece still includes the mix-up.
