An “Empire” spinoff is in the works, with series creator Lee Daniels revealing plans for a new prequel series in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter following a session for his other Fox series, “Star”, at Wednesday’s Fox presentation at the TV Critics Association press tour in Pasadena.
“We’re in talks,” Daniels told THR. “We’re finally figuring it out. It takes a minute, you know? We just really had to build the foundation of ‘Empire’ so we then try to figure out what that B-chorus is. It looks like it’s going to happen.”
Daniels didn’t share any details about the prospective spinoff, and wouldn’t reveal whether it would be a new pilot for the upcoming season or a “backdoor pilot” that would be set in a special episode of “Empire”. He also didn’t offer any information on the premise of the spinoff, although rumours earlier this year indicated it could be a prequel focusing on Cookie, played by Taraji P. Henson.
“It could be,” Daniels said of a possible prequel. “We really are in deep talks about it, and we’re having all these ideas thrown around to figure it out. But I can officially say that we will be having a spinoff.”
