All eyes will be on the Academy Awards red carpet on Oscars Sunday, as much for the designer gowns as for the stars themselves walking the red carpet. It remains to be seen which design house three-time Oscar winner, Meryl Streep, goes with for movie’s biggest night – but we know one designer that’s out of the running, Karl Lagerfeld.
Streep, who is nominated for her performance in “Florence Foster Jenkins”, will be celebrating her 20th Oscar nomination Sunday. While the actress is preparing for the big night, she can cancel one fashion house out for the event: Chanel.
Lagerfeld told Women’s Wear Daily that he was working on Streep’s dress for the ceremony, but that her team pulled out at the last minute.
“I made a sketch, and we started to make the dress,” Lagerfeld said, but shortly after his team started production on the gown, Streep’s camp shut it down. “‘Don’t continue the dress. We found somebody who will pay us,’” Lagerfeld claimed.
Streep’s rep refuted Lagerfeld’s claim, telling ET Canada: “This is a completely untrue story. Ms. Streep would NEVER wear anything in exchange for payment. This can be corroborated by Nancy Walsh at Chanel.”
While Lagerfeld’s team hasn’t responded to Streep’s claim, he did add in one final dig in his original statement: “A genius actress, but cheapness also, no?”
This isn’t the first time Lagerfeld has gotten into a feud with a celebrity. Last October, he spoke out about Kim Kardashian’s Paris robbery and wasn’t very sympathetic and instead questioned where her security was. “I don’t understand why she was in a hotel with no security and things like this,” he said of the incident.
In 2012, when he was asked about Pippa Middleton, he had a lot to say. “I don’t like her face. She should only show her back,” he said of the Duchess of Cambridge’s sister. Believe it or note, Adele is also on his list of celebrities that he has harshly critiqued. “The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice,” he said.
Even though Streep isn’t one of the celebrities to take payment for donning an outfit, stylist Brad Goreski revealed many stars are paid to wear designs for red carpet events: “If someone shows up to the Oscars in a black dress and huge statement necklace, chances are they’re being paid by a jewellery company,” he revealed at the 2015 Vulture Festival.
Fellow stylist, Jessica Paster, echoed his statements. “I’m not going to bulls**t. If it looks gorgeous on you and this is the dress we were going to pick anyway, why not be paid?” she said.
