The 2017 awards season may go down in history as one marred by catastrophe.
This year’s Oscars ended on a disastrous note after “La La Land” was mistakenly announced as Best Picture and the cast and producers were handed an award meant for “Moonlight”. Following suit, Sunday’s iHeartRadio Awards decided to up the ante with a similar flub.
It was initially reported that former One Direction member Zayn Malik had won Best Music Video for his hit song “Pillowtalk”. The 24-year-old singer shared a brief acceptance speech on Twitter, which was shared by iHeartRadio on their Snapchat.
Just one day later, iHeartRadio reportedly caught the error and revealed that Fifth Harmony and Ty Dolla $ign’s “Work From Home” video had actually won the fan-voted award. The group handled things a little differently than the Oscars notorious Best Picture fiasco.
Instead of admitting to any sort of mistake, iHeartRadio declared Malik the winner of a previously unannounced award called “Best Solo Breakout”. Some fans on Twitter were not willing to have the wool be pulled over their eyes, going so far as to spark the trending hashtag #iHeartWasRigged.
Just one month ago, Malik defended the honour of his girlfriend Gigi Hadid after she was accused of being racist and “making fun of Asian people” in a Snapchat video posted by her sister Bella Hadid.
