Eliza Dushku is opening about about her struggles with alcohol and drug abuse, discussing her past as a recovering drug addict and drug addict in a speech to a group of students in New Hampshire.
Speaking with the students, the former “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” star admitted that the most difficult thing she ever did was seek help — but it’s also the one thing that saved her from the dark path she was on.
“Something a lot of people don’t know about me is that I am an alcoholic and I was a drug addict for a lot of years,” said Dushku, 36. “You hear people say ‘I am that’ because I am that and I’m always going to be that but the difference between me and an alcoholic or a drug addict that still drinks and does drugs is that I am sober.”
As she found herself getting dragged deeper and deeper into the depths of addiction, she eventually realized that drugs weren’t working for her the way they once did.
“I loved the first time I took a drug because I loved how it made me feel, I loved the way it made me not feel and I didn’t have to feel,” she said. “It was fun and I loved it until it wasn’t. Drugs didn’t love me, they didn’t love my family. They definitely didn’t love my friends that died, I have a lot of friends that are dead.”
