Luxury fashion designers Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen sat down for rare interview with Net-a-Porter’s weekly digital magazine, The EDIT, discussing the “new luxury” philosophy that underlies their second fashion label, Elizabeth and James, as well as discussing the transition from their highly public early careers to their extremely private current careers in the fashion industry.
“I’ve always been a worker. It has taken me a lot to figure out how to take a vacation,” says Ashley of her work ethic, while Mary-Kate adds: “I think we’re lucky [working hard] comes quite naturally for us. We don’t need so much time to sit and think and ponder.”
In order to be productive on the job, Mary-Kate believes it’s important to take time away from work. “I have a husband, two step-kids and a life; I have to go home and cook dinner,” she says. “I run on the weekend. You find the thing that helps you relax and if you don’t have it, you have to look for it. Or you get burned out and then you’re not productive.”
Unlike most people today, the former “Full House” stars admit they never really embraced social media — and they like it that way. “Because we don’t dive into that whole world [of social media] and we don’t have Facebook, we’ve never been connected to our fans in that way,” admits Ashley.
As Mary-Kate explains, Elizabeth and James is a turning point, describing the label as “the new luxury. It’s the idea that you can still have fashion, great fabrics and great fits at a lower price point.”
