Amidst Jimmy Kimmel tweeting to Donald Trump and the headline-making Best Picture flub, one small but fascinating moment from this year’s Oscars appeared to have gone unnoticed — until now.
The moment in question came when the camera cut to a shot of Nicole Kidman in the audience, clapping. Video of her strange clapping, arching her fingers outward to create a clap not unlike that of a trained seal, has since gone viral, with those who view it wondering: “What’s up with that?”
Finally the secret is out, after the “Big Little Lies” star gave an interview to an Australian radio show to reveal the strange hand positioning was simply to protect her pricey bling. As Kidman explained to the “The Kyle and Jackie O Show”, she didn’t want to damage the huge Harry Winston ring that had been loaned to her for the ceremony.
“It was really awkward, and I was like: ‘Gosh, I really want to clap,” she said.
“I don’t want to not be clapping, which would be worse right? ‘Why isn’t Nicole clapping?'” she said, joking about the inevitable headlines.
“So therefore I’m clapping but it was really difficult because I had this huge ring on which was not my own but was absolutely gorgeous and I was terrified of damaging it.”
As the Daily Mail reports, the “Lion” nominee was sporting more than 119 carats of Harry Winston diamonds while attending the Academy Awards with husband Keith Urban, including a 13.58-carat pearl-shaped diamond ring set in platinum. Mystery solved!
