While rumours swirl that estranged exes Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner may be calling off their divorce and reconciling after their 2015 separation, Affleck has come forward to reveal that he recently “completed treatment for alcohol addiction; something I’ve dealt with in the past and will continue to confront,” he writes in a revealing Facebook post.
“I want to live life to the fullest and be the best father I can be,” adds the two-time Oscar-winner. “I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take the first step.”
He also credits Garner for her support while he walks the road to recovery. “I’m lucky to have the love of my family and friends, including my co-parent, Jen, who has supported me and cared for our kids as I’ve done the work I set out to do,” he writes. “This was the first of many steps being taken towards a positive recovery.”
The “Batman v Superman” star is right back to his fatherly duties after completing the stint in rehab. Affleck and Garner were spotted Wednesday morning taking their son Samuel, 5, to school in Los Angeles. A source close to the actor told People, “He is thrilled to be back with his kids… Clearly you see that his kids mean the world to him.”
“He has a great support system around him,” the friend continued. “Really nice to see his friends and family gather for him — the industry too. This was his decision to be proactive to live a healthy life. He’s been very moved by the outpouring of support.”
Back in 2012, Affleck revealed that he previously underwent treatment for undisclosed addiction issues at age 29. “I went to rehab for being 29 and partying too much and not having a lot of boundaries and to clear my head and try to get some idea of who I wanted to be,” Affleck, now 44, told The Hollywood Reporter in a 2012 cover story. “It was more a ‘let me get myself straight,’ before it became a rite of passage.”
According to the Daily Mail, Affleck spent two weeks in rehab, checking himself in shortly after this year’s Academy Awards on Feb. 26.
