At 84-years-of-age, Hollywood legend Michael Caine is opening up about fearing his own death.
“I know my days are numbered and that’s the main worry,” the British star told The Sun on Sunday about his major attempt to improve his health in his mid-80s.
“You know, I’ve lost 13kgs just because I want to see my grandchildren,” he continued, crediting his two children and three grandkids with his recent reality check. “They’re twins of 6 and a boy of 7. I’d like to get to 17 for the boy.”
Caine has also “cut back on the drinking” and says he’s “always looking up what’s the best thing against cancer.”
The screen icon went on to credit his 70-year-old wife, Shakira, for helping him maintain a clean bill of health. “Without her, I’d have been dead long ago. I used to drink a bottle of vodka a day and smoke several packs of cigarettes.”
The “Italian Job” star previously smoked 80 cigarettes per day before an inspiring talk with actor Tony Curtis prompted him to quit the unhealthy habit. “You’re going to die, Michael, if you keep doing that,” Curtis warned him after witnessing him chain-smoking at a party.
Caine celebrated his 84th birthday on March 14.
