Kristi Yamaguchi’s kind words may not be the best way to break the ice.
The two-time world champion figure skater and season six “Dancing with the Stars” winner wished her fellow athlete Nancy Kerrigan luck ahead of the latter’s appearance on season 24 of the celebrity dance competition. “So excited for you Nancy Kerrigan! Can’t wait to see you grace that ballroom floor, break a leg!” Yamaguchi, 45, wrote.
Despite her kind intentions, it may have slipped Yamaguchi’s mind that Kerrigan was the victim of the infamous Tonya Harding scandal. In January 1994, Harding’s ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, hired a man to attack Kerrigan. The man struck Kerrigan’s knee with a baton in hopes of preventing her from competing in the 1994 Winter Olympics. Fortunately the attacker didn’t break the Olympian’s leg, but he came inches away from shattering her kneecap.
Twitter definitely did not forget what many consider to be the biggest scandal in figure skating history. Social media came out in full force, reacting to Yamaguchi’s “break a leg” comment with a variety of hilarious GIFs.
Yamaguchi’s rep spoke to TMZ and said there was no intended shade behind the tweet.
Her spokesperson claims they’ve been friends for years and there is only love between the two. Kerrigan’s rep also debunked any rumours of a feud and revealed the two spoke on the phone on Wednesday night and laughed it off.
In fact, Kerrigan joined Yamaguchi for an Instagram post in which the two, smiling widely, hold up a sign reading, “Break a Leg.” No feud to see her, folks!
Season 24 of “DWTS” premiered on Monday, March 20. Meanwhile, Kerrigan’s one-time nemesis will be the subject of the upcoming 2018 biopic “I, Tonya”, with Margot Robbie starring as disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding.
