Fans of “The Walking Dead” know actor Daniel Newman for his portrayal of Daniel from the Kingdom on the zombie-apocalypse TV hit, but what may not be so well known is that Newman is also gay.
In a new YouTube video, Newman formally comes out, explaining that while he was already openly gay he had an experience that led him feeling the need to let people outside of his immediate circle know.
Newman — who has also appeared in such TV series as “Homeland”, “The Walking Dead” and “Heroes” — explains in the video that he was volunteering at a centre for homeless young people when a woman at the centre thanked him for supporting the LGBTQ community, assuming he was heterosexual.
When Newman told her that he was gay, she asked him why he had never spoken out about it publicly.
“It hit me like a gut punch,” says Newman in the video. “It felt like someone knocked the wind out from me. And I realized how important it is in this day and age to be visible — to let people who know you are.”
After posting the video on YouTube, Newman found himself deluged with positive responses on social media, and sent out a reply on Twitter.
“Thanks for all the love from around the world!” Newman wrote.
