Elton John is revealing the sage wisdom he passed down to Ed Sheeran in a new interview with Rolling Stone.
John has been a mentor to the “Shape of You” singer and has, over the years, given him advice on his career, his choices and music, of course.
Apparently, the “Rocket Man” singer was the one who convinced Sheeran to take a much-needed break last year. “He was so omnipresent I said, ‘Ed, even I’m sick of you. Go away.’ And he did. He just went to the Far East with his girlfriend, had a great time, put on a lot of weight, ate food and came back,” John dished.
Unfortunately, John knows that Sheeran puts on weight easily like he does and he warned him about it. Sheeran didn’t listen. “One thing I said to him when he went, I said, ‘Don’t put on weight,’ because he’s very prone to put on weight like I am. And he came back heavy, but he lost it all for the album. He just went away and had a great time,” he revealed.
“It was the most brilliant thing he could have done, because it refreshes your soul – not that I ever did it,” the music icon says of spending time away from the spotlight, even if how Sheeran did it was not his thing. “I’m not one for going to the Far East and walking around with a backpack on; I just find that not my cup of tea. I’m too much involved with other things.”
John sees a lot of himself in fellow Brit, Sheeran and he is reminded of how he was early on in his own career. “He reminds me of me when I first started out; his enthusiasm and his love. He’s always doing something, whether he’s writing his own stuff or he’s writing with other people,” the singer told the magazine.
Sheeran clearly loves Elton John just as much. In February, when asked if he would get a tattoo of either Taylor Swift or John in an interview with Be Box Music, he said: “I reckon Elton’s face because he’s always asking me to sit on it. He f**king does; I’m not even joking.”
