Freida Pinto is opening up about her 2014 split from Dev Patel, explaining that her breakup with the “Lion” star came about after she found herself having a midlife crisis when she was 28.
“For me it started at the age of 28, 29,” Pinto tells the Daily Mail. “Maybe it’s the body. Maybe it’s something about moving into womanhood from being a girl. You start asking, ‘What do I really want?'”
Pinto and Patel met when they co-starred in the 2008 Oscar-winner “Slumdog Millionaire”, which proved to be a launching pad for both their careers.
“There comes a point where you’ve got everything you want – career, love, family – but you’ve ignored yourself,” says Pinto of the existential crisis she experienced in her late 20s. “Life hits you and you think, “What about me? What do I really want?”’
Pinto, now 32, reveals that she’s single at the moment — and loving it.
“For the first time, I finally understand the concept of self-love and self-care,” she tells the Mail. “I’m single and happy, and busy. I haven’t been single for a long time. It’s like being born again.”
Pinto, who’ll soon be seen in Showtime’s upcoming drama series “Guerilla”, looks back fondly at her relationship with Patel. “You can be with someone and it can be really good for your growth. That’s what Dev was for me,” she explains. “The seven years I was with him were so impactful. But I ended up being single when I started thinking about these other things.’”
Their split was apparently an amicable one, and she says the two remain friends. “You can’t share such a monumental shift in life, then not be friends,” she says. “That would be the saddest thing ever.”
