Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis are normally pretty private when it comes to their marriage and life at home with their two young children, but Kutcher couldn’t help but pay tribute to his family while accepting an award this weekend.
The actor and activist was in his home state of Iowa on Saturday, accepting The Robert D. Ray Pillar of Character Award for his work with local schools and for co-founding the Native Fund, an organization helping Iowans affected by disaster, when he mentioned his wife and children while discussing personal character. And according to Kutcher, his wife has plenty of it.
“I mean, I’m telling you, this morning, I woke up and she kicked my a** on character,” he told the crowd. “I thought I was awesome because I got up early and helped with the kids before she woke up and I let her sleep a little bit and then she’s like, ‘Well, now you’re gonna act tired? I do it every day.’ But it was a character moment, right? Because she’s right!” Kutcher and Kunis are parents to daughter Wyatt, 2, and son Dimitri, four months.
The proud father also used the speech as an opportunity to make fun of himself, saying he was likely the only recipient of an award honouring character who had faced a felony burglary charge for breaking into his high school, or who had been pulled over by a state trooper in his youth while, “tripping on mushrooms” or, “had his name splashed across every gossip magazine as an adulterer” referring to his 2012 headline-grabbing split from Demi Moore.
However, the 39-year-old stressed the importance of learning from your mistakes saying, “As long as you have love and kindness and optimism and a pursuit of something greater in your heart, you’re the lucky one. So this award is for you. It is for my family, it’s for all four of my parents, it’s for my wife, who kicks my ass on character every day.”
