Kendrick Lamar will be taking the stage at Coachella Sunday night to close out this year’s festival, but he has plenty to celebrate in the meantime now that Billboard is reporting that his newly released album “Damn.” has landed at the #1 spot in the Billboard Top 200, the biggest debut of 2017 so far.
According to data from Nielsen Music, “Damn.” sold 603,000 equivalent album units during the ending April 20, “the most units earned by an album in a single week in nearly a year” (that earlier honour went to Drake’s “Views”, which racked up opening-week sales of 1.04 million units during the week ending May 5, 2016).
Prior to the release of “Damn.”, 2017’s biggest debut was Drake’s “More Life”, which sold 505,000 units during the week ending Mar. 23.
As Billboard notes, “Damn.” is Lamar’s third consecutive album to reach the #1 spot, following last year’s “Untitled Unmastered” and his 2015 album “To Pimp a Butterfly”.
Nobody is more proud of the new album’s success than Lamar’s mom, who sent her son a hilarious emoji-laden text (which Lamar shared on Instagram) declaring that the “CD is bombbbbb!” and that “Damn.” is “your best one to me, no bulls***t.”
