President Trump may not be attending the White House Correspondents’ Dinner this year, but former president George W. Bush made an appearance at Samantha Bee’s Not The White House Correspondents’ Dinner – sort of.
Will Ferrell revived the Dubya impression he crafted during his days on “Saturday Night Live,” earning a standing ovation from the crowd when he took the stage as a special surprise guest at the end of the event.
“For the longest time I was considered the worst president of all time. That has changed,” said Ferrell as Bush. He went on to criticize Trump saying, “I needed eight years, a catastrophic flood, a war built on a lie and an economic disaster. The new guy only needed 100 days.” Ferrell also poked fun at Bush’s post-presidential painting hobby, debuting a new portrait he painted of President Trump.
“Bush” continued to bash Trump saying, “The new guy has thin skin. He’s what you’d call a snowflake. … He can’t handle the heat. He’s a weak man. He can’t even sit in the White House, he runs down to the Mar-a-Lago.” Before leaving the stage Ferrell dispensed three words of advice for the current Commander-In-Chief: “eat a salad.”
Canadian-born Bee has called her Not The White House Correspondents’ Dinner a “celebration of the free press” which she has said is “tremendously under attack.” During the event she put Trump on blast for being the first president since 1981 to not attend a White House Correspondents’ Dinner (in ’81 President Reagan was recovering from his assassination attempt) saying Trump, “ran away from the Vietnam War, he ran away from two different Republican debates and now he’s run away from the Correspondents’ Dinner. I guess we know why he wears those lumpy, ill-fitting old man pants: it’s because he’s constantly sh***ing himself.”
Bee also took shots at the FBI investigations of Hillary Clinton saying, “Hillary is under so many investigations I’m starting to think FBI really does stand for Female Body Inspector.” In a taped segment in which she imagines herself at a future White House Correspondents’ Dinner with Mike Pence as president, the host said “I think we all owe President Pence a debt of gratitude for bravely stepping into the role after Trump got his head stuck in that jar of honey. What a tragedy.” Referencing the VP’s previous support of conversion therapy for gays, Bee said, “I didn’t think you’d make a good president at all, Mike Pence, but I’m coming around, so, in at least this case, the conversion therapy is working.”
Actor and comedian Billy Eichner got in on the laughs, taking aim at Fox News and recently-dismissed anchor Bill O’Reilly saying, “Turns out it’s bad business to have your flagship show hosted by 400 pounds of sexual-harassment allegations in a 200-pound bag.” Referencing the multi-million dollar payouts awarded to sexual harassment accusers by Fox News, Eichner said, “What a triumph for women that career sexual predators are finally getting what they deserve: $65 million and age-appropriate retirement.”
Meanwhile Silicon Valley’s Kumail Nanjiani bashed Trump, calling him “that weird high school friend of yours that shows up at the party but doesn’t bring any beer, drinks everyone’s liquor, is weird to all the girls, and on the way out doesn’t condemn hate crimes.”
