Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson covers the June issue of GQ magazine and inside, he discusses his life, his thoughts on Donald Trump, and his own potential political run.
It all began in June 2016 when The Washington Post published a piece that suggested that “The Fate of the Furious” actor would make a great presidential candidate. Based on his charm and his appeal to general audiences, the actor would make a great leader. When asked now, nearly a year later, if he’s seriously considered running for office, he said things have changed for him.
“It started coming up more and more. There was a real sense of earnestness, which made me go home and think, Let me really rethink my answer and make sure I am giving an answer that is truthful and also respectful. I didn’t want to be flippant. ‘We’ll have three days off for a weekend! No taxes!’” he says.
So, would he? “I think that it’s a real possibility,” the “Baywatch” star admits.
While he ponders his own political run, he’s currently occupied with how Donald Trump is acting as president. The actor doesn’t agree with his decisions so far and thinks he should be bringing people together.
“I completely disagree with it,” Johnson says. “I believe in our national security to the core, but I don’t believe in a ‘ban’ that bans immigrants. I believe in inclusion. Our country was built on that, and it continues to be made strong by that.”
He’d like to see Trump be a better leader who listens to the people. “When there’s a disagreement, and you have a large group of people that you’re in a disagreement with—for example, the media—I feel like it informs me that I could be better,” he says. “We all have issues, and we all gotta work our s**t out. And I feel like one of the qualities of a great leader is not shutting people out. I miss that part. Even if we disagree, we’ve got to figure it out.”
For Johnson, growing up underprivileged made him a fighter and it’s his story that people relate to the most. He appreciates the education he received and how it shaped him. “We had no money, and my grades were just average,” he says.
“So it wasn’t like I was getting an academic scholarship. The University of Miami was the top program in the country. They were the national champions. I just wanted to go where I could compete.”
