Tracy Morgan and Stephen Colbert both performed at the same “Saturday Night Live” audition back in 1996, but only one of them wound up in the “SNL” cast.
That’s what Colbert reminded Morgan when he turned up on his “Late Show” couch on Friday night, although Morgan admitted he has zero recollection of seeing Colbert at the audition.
“How do you remember?” Morgan asked Colbert when shared his recollection of Morgan’s hilarious “SNL” audition.
“Because I was there. You and I were both there in the final callback going to network in 1996,” Colbert explained.
Morgan took a little shot. “I never worked with… oh, you didn’t get the job. My bad,” he quipped. “I’m sorry you didn’t get the job! I’m sorry!”
Colbert shot back: “I forgot that part of the story, Tracy, thanks so much for reminding me,” with Colbert joking that he knew he would never land the job because he and Morgan were “too alike.”
Looking back, the former “30 Rock” star is still awed by the launching pad that “SNL” provided for his comedy career. “My days on ‘Saturday Night Live’ are still important to me now, so important to me,” he said.
