What was meant to be a sweet greeting to his wife on Mother’s Day has turned into a headache for Russell Wilson after his Instagram message to Ciara caused a firestorm of controversy to erupt on social media.
“Nothing better than spending time with you,” wrote Wilson in the caption of a photo of himself and Ciara. “You are an amazing mom & I’m so grateful I get to spend the rest of my life with you & raising our kids. I love you! #HappyMothersDay Weekend my love. @Ciara”
The problem? “Our kids” refers to the couple’s newborn baby girl and Ciara’s two-year-old son Future Zahir, fathered by her previous fiance: rapper Future. Ciara and her ex recently came to an agreement after a bitter custody battle, with little Future spending the majority of his time with his mom while his dad’s on tour.
The use of “our” led some to slam Wilson, pointing out that Future isn’t his child.
“You gotta think how @future thinks,” wrote one commenter. “He still has a kid that’s not yours and no matter what you have to respect that as a man @dangerusswilson.”
“Ur kid not our kids baby future is future child,” added another person.
Not everyone felt that way, however, with some commenters applauding the NFL’s star inclusiveness of little Future.
“I especially admire Russell for taking on the responsibility of raising an infant as your own, marrying that infant’s mother and making them your family,” one person wrote. “What [a] great man!”
Added another: “A Loving Family is all that matters.”
Future has yet to comment on the Instagram post and the ensuing controversy, but Ciara has posted an adorable video to her Insta Stories that pretty much confirms her thoughts on the matter. Watch below.
