Kathy Griffin Apologizes For Decapitated Trump Pic, CNN Fires Her From New Year’s Eve Hosting Duties

Kathy Griffin caused shock and outrage when she shared a photo and video on social media in which she’s depicted happily holding the bloody, severed head of Donald Trump.

Following the release of the photo, part of a collaboration with artist Tyler Shields, Griffin returned to Twitter — but this time to offer an apology.

“I sincerely apologize,” says the outspoken comedian in the short video she posted on her Twitter feed. “I’m just now seeing the reaction of these images.”

As Griffin explains, being a standup comic means sometimes going too far, and she acknowledges that’s precisely what she did.

“I crossed the line. I move the line, then I cross it. I went way too far,” she adds.

“The image is too disturbing,” she says. “I understand how it offends people. It wasn’t funny — I get it. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my career. I will continue.”

As a result, Griffin says she’s “taking down the image. Gonna ask the photographer to take down the image, and I beg for your forgiveness. I went too far, I made a mistake and I was wrong.”

The shocking photo, which Griffin has, as promised, removed from her social media, depicts Trump as if he’s been beheaded, and was met with a major backlash throughout social media.

In fact, outrage even crossed political party lines, with antithetical presidential scions Donald Trump Jr. and Chelsea Clinton both taking to Twitter to slam Griffin for imagery suggesting the assassination of the president of the United States.

Griffin even found herself on the receiving end of a Twitter smackdown from Anderson Cooper, with whom she’s rung in the New Year on CNN for the past number of years.

“For the record, I am appalled by the photo shoot Kathy Griffin took part in,” writes Cooper. “It is clearly disgusting and completely inappropriate.”

While Griffin and Shields have removed the image from their respective social media accounts, the controversial, disturbing photo can still be found throughout the Internet.

Griffin, alongside Cooper, was a co-host of CNN’s New Year’s Eve broadcast. As a result of the disturbing images she distributed on Tuesday, the network has terminated her contract and Griffin will no longer appear on the New Year’s Eve program:

In addition to CNN, a casino has cancelled an upcoming Kathy Griffin show.
