Acclaimed English actress Dame Judi Dench is back in the new trailer for “Victoria and Abdul”.
An unlikely friendship between royalty and a servant is the focus of this biographical drama. Dench (“Shakespeare in Love”, “Skyfall”) plays the role of Queen Victoria opposite “Furious 7” actor Ali Fazal as her servant Abdul Karim.
“Whatever you do, you must not look at Her Majesty,” Abdul is told, but when he accidentally makes eye contact with the Queen an oddball duo is born.
Stephen Frears sits in the director’s chair for this film; the Oscar-nominated English filmmaker also directed Helen Mirren to an Oscar in 2006’s “The Queen”.
The role marks Dench’s first time playing Queen Victoria in two decades, following her role in “Mrs. Brown”. In fact, the September 8 U.K. premiere of “Victoria and Abdul” takes place almost exactly 20 years after the “Mrs. Brown” U.K. premiere.
“Victoria and Abdul” premieres in North America on September 22.
