The Rock Returns With Season 3 Of HBO Comedy ‘Ballers’

While increasing numbers of stars have been straddling the worlds of film and TV recently (see: Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon in “Big Little Lies”), Dwayne Johnson has been doing it for years, and while his latest, “Baywatch”, hit theatres last week, July will see the third season of his HBO comedy “Ballers”.

The possible future presidential candidate stars as former NFL star Spencer Strasmore, whose football career was sidelined by injury. As a result, he reinvented himself as a financial adviser for professional athletes — who don’t always prove to be as adept at handling their millions as they are at earning them.

HBO has just dropped the trailer for the upcoming third season, which sees Spencer seemingly on the mend after checking himself in to a medical facility to address the hip problem that dogged him throughout season two.

Returning alongside Johnson is Rob Corddry (“Childrens Hospital”) as Spence’s business partner, Joe, and Andy Garcia (“Ocean’s Thirteen”), who’ll be reprising the role of Spence’s arch-nemesis, Andre Allen, a Miami wealth-management pro who’s after the same talent pool as Spence.

“Ballers” has clearly been a hit with Johnson’s legions of fans; after only two episodes aired in season two, HBO announced plans to greenlight the show for a third season, which The Rock celebrated on Instagram.

“Millions of you tune in every week to join us on this crazy journey of chasin’ greatness and dealin’ with life’s pain… and the greatest compliment we always hear from you is that we’re real and authentic,” he wrote in a 2016 Instagram post. “Means the world considering how close this character is to my bones.”
