Kathy Griffin stepped knee deep in controversy earlier this week when she took to social media and shared a photo in which she proudly holds the bloody, severed head of Donald Trump — a photo that cost her a longtime gig co-hosting CNN’s New Year’s Eve celebrations and led to tsunami-sized backlash on social media.
While some are starting to wonder if Griffin’s career can recover from such a hit, the outspoken comic wasted no time in going on the offensive.
In a tweet from lawyer Lisa Bloom — who was instrumental in toppling Bill O’Reilly from Fox News, and just happens to be the daughter of universally feared attorney Gloria Allred — she announced that she’s now representing Griffin and they held a press conference on Friday.
In the tweet, Bloom shared a press release indicating that Griffin will not be going down quietly.
“Earlier this week, Ms. Griffin released a controversial photograph of herself posing with a faux-bloody mask of Donald Trump’s face,” reads the release. “Ms. Griffin and Ms. Bloom will explain the true motivation behind the image, and respond to the bullying from the Trump family she has endured.”
As outrage grew — even Chelsea Clinton, no fan of Trump, called the photo “vile” — a chastened Griffin then changed course to offer a full-on apology, admitting she “went way too far.”
Since posting the controversial image, several Trumps have blasted Griffin, including the president himself, who wrote that Griffin “should be ashamed of herself.”
Prior to taking on Griffin as a client, Bloom represented three of the women claiming that ousted Fox News personality Bill O’Reilly sexually harassed them. In addition, she has also filed claims against Bill Cosby on behalf of one of his alleged victims, and has also represented several women who accused now-President Trump of sexual harassment during his presidential campaign.
Meanwhile, Griffin’s apology has done little to quell the backlash, something that veteran broadcaster Larry King thinks is unwarranted.
Another celebrity who’s coming to Griffin’s defence is Alec Baldwin, who offered some advice in a series of tweets.
“Kathy… f— them them. F— them all,” Baldwin, 59, wrote in his profanity-laced fourth tweet. “No one believes you meant to threaten Trump. Trump is such a senile idiot, all he has is Twitter fights.”
He offered this final piece of advice:
