Execs at Warner Bros. are no doubt celebrating the weekend’s box office results now that “Wonder Woman” is estimated to earn $100.5 million in its debut weekend.
Not only is that a huge number, but Variety points out that it’s also more than the opening weekends of “Iron Man” ($98.6 million), “Doctor Strange” ($85 million) and “Thor” ($65.7 million) — but less than “Deadpool” ($132 million) and “Man of Steel” ($116.6 million).
Meanwhile, “Wonder Woman” has also been a hit with critics, scoring an impressive 93 per cent rating on “Rotten Tomatoes”.
Landing in distant second this weekend was “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie”, which took in $23.5 million in its opening weekend, while “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” is estimated to take third place with $22 million in weekend two.
Rounding out the weekend’s top five are “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” which added an additional $10 million to its domestic gross of $350 million, and “Baywatch”, which took in another $9 million in its second weekend of release to capture fifth place.
