Katy Perry’s new album “Witness” has debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 charts.
The achievement marks Perry’s third consecutive chart-topping album. “Witness”, the singer’s fifth studio album, sold 180,000 total copies in its first week out. The sales are a steep decline from the 286,000 copies “Prism” sold upon release in 2013, but her new album’s sales were still strong enough to seize the top spot.
“Witness” had the best-selling week by a female artist since Lady Gaga’s “Joanne” in November 2016, according to Billboard. The feat occured just one week after fellow singer Halsey made history as 2017’s first female artist to reign supreme over the Billboard 200 chart.
Kendrick Lamar’s “DAMN.” is still holding onto the number two spot, marking its ninth straight week hovering the upper echelon of the chart. Newcomer SZA rounds out the top three with her anticipated debut album “Ctrl” selling 60,000 sold units.
“Witness” was bolstered by three singles: “Chained to the Rhythm” featuring Skip Marley, “Bon Appetit” with Migos and “Swish Swish” featuring Nicki Minaj.
