Lorde has issued an apology after some comments she made about her friendship with Taylor Swift in a recent interview were perceived to be insensitive to the disabled and people suffering from autoimmune diseases.
The trouble started when the New Zealand hitmaker gave an interview to Britain’s Guardian newspaper, at one point opening up about her friendship with Taylor Swift.
“It’s like having a friend with very specific allergies,” she said of being friends with someone as famous as T-Swift. “There are certain places you can’t go together. Certain things you can’t do. There are these different sets of considerations within the friendship. It’s like having a friend with an autoimmune disease.”
The pot was stirred thanks to a Buzzfeed article that took Lorde to task for her remarks. “Sooo, lemme get this straight,” quipped Buzzfeed. “Lorde thinks having a friend as famous as Taylor is like having a friend with lupus? Or multiple sclerosis? Or type 1 diabetes? GOT IT!”
This led to Lorde being criticized by numerous folks in the Twittersphere, and she was quick to offer an apology for what was ultimately a poor analogy.
Noting that she “didn’t mention Taylor” by name in the interview, Lorde admitted: “I f**ked up & that was really insensitive. I’m sorry.”
