Sultry songstress Lana Del Rey has stepped up the hype for her upcoming album by dropping two brand new songs featuring A$SAP Rocky.
Del Rey appeared on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show on Apple Music to premiere the hot new tracks and talk about her fifth studio album, “Lust for Life,” which is released Friday, July 21. She also shared the tracklisting and pre-order information.
“Summer Bummer” (feat. A$SAP Rocky & Playboi Carti) and “Groupie Love” (feat. A$AP Rocky) are two of the 16 tracks which make up the new record. You’ll notice straight away that both songs contain a faster tempo than Del Rey’s usually slow, seductive melodies.
The “Love” hitmaker told Lowe the faster pace was intentional: “Last record I had “High By The Beach, ” and felt like I was into this mid-tempo groove and now I’m all the way in.”
The 32-year-old singer also spoke about her relationship with A$AP Rocky, who has become a frequent collaborator in both Del Rey’s music and fashion.
“He was in my video for “National Anthem,” I don’t even know if that was 2011 or 12, I’ve been in touch with him since then,” Del Rey said. “He travels a lot but sometimes he’s in town for a month, and when he is I’ll come to the studio and hear what he’s working on and do background vocals on his track. There are probably a lot of tracks that we’re both on over the years.”
She added: “Sometimes he’ll [Rocky] see me and be like ‘what are you wearing?’ He’s way more fashion forward than I am. He gets it, but polo shirt and jeans like I’m wearing right now, he might have something to say about it.”
Del Rey then took a time-out from discussing her music to FaceTime the rapper while he was on the toilet.
Rocky isn’t the only guest feature on “Lust for Life,” the follow-up to 2015’s “Honeymoon” will also include songs with Sean Ono Lennon, Stevie Nicks, and, of course, The Weeknd, who joins the singer on the album’s title track.
On working with Nicks, Del Rey said she was nervous because she was the only feature artist on the album she didn’t know personally. “I thought she’d say no, but she said yes right away,” she told Lowe.
She continued: “There were so many things [Nicks] said. I loved hearing about her boyfriends. I don’t remember, I feel like she dated Don Henley, and she was saying how fun it was when she was making a ton of music, and everyone was out all the time.”
On the topic of the record’s point of view, Del Rey told the Beats 1 host: “I really feel like culture and things are shifting socially in such a big way. It would be weird not to shift with it. I felt a natural shift but I felt like I wanted to give more, I didn’t want to be in my head as much.”
