Kesha Debuts Funky NSFW Female Empowerment Song ‘Woman’: ‘I Wanted An Anthem’

Kesha wants everyone to know she’s a “motherf***ing woman” in her new power anthem about being self-sufficient and strong.

Backed by the funky horns of The Dap-Kings, Kesha rocks out in all-gold ensemble in the video for “Woman”, the new track off her upcoming album, Rainbow. Filmed at the Oddity Bar in Delaware, Kesha writhes her way through the song about buying her own things, paying her own bills, driving around in a Cadillac with her girls, and how she doesn’t need a man to hold her tight when she’s out having fun with her ladies. A fun anthem about feminism, the single has a loose and free-form feel, with Kesha even laughing at various points during the song, adding to the joyous vibes.

The singer penned an essay about the new track for Rolling Stone, talking about her new musical direction and paying homage to her musical influences, from The Beach Boys to Dolly Parton, with the latter making a cameo on one of the album’s songs.

“I wanted this song to capture that organic, raw, soulful sound and keep the imperfect moments in the recordings because I find the magic in the imperfections,” she says of the NSFW track.

And if it looks like Kesha is having a blast in the video, it’s because she is.

“To me, the thing I’m most proud of is that the song and video never lost the pure joy from the day it was birthed. I really hope people enjoy this song because I had the best time making it,” she says.  “I hope that energy passes through people and the fun is infectious. It’s important for me that people know that there are a lot of emotions on my new album, Rainbow, but the wild fun energy that first inspired me to perform has not and will never go away.”

Kesha says the song is a symbol of her owning her own womanhood.

“I have always been a feminist, but for much of my life I felt like a little girl trying to figure things out. In the past few years, I have felt like a woman more than ever,” she writes in Rolling Stone. “I just feel the strength and awesomeness and power of being female.”

But don’t worry, boys, Kesha says you can fully embrace “Woman”, too.

“I just really f***ing love being a woman and I wanted an anthem for anyone else who wants to yell about being self-sufficient and strong (Yes, men, this song can be for you too.),” Kesha writes, adding that the song was co-written by two men. “It was such a beautiful experience to write such a strong female empowerment song with two men, Drew Pearson and Stephen Wrabel, because it reinforces how supportive men can be of women AND feminism.”

Rainbow drops August 11.
